But wait! That is not it. There’s one more element to the inventor’s get-up that may shoot your eyebrow up into the region of your hairline: goggles. Yes, that is right. These scientist-inventor types are quite likely to make goggles a go-to, and most steampunk enthusiasts will agree this is done with complete justification. After all, goggles are a necessary safety precaution when crafting in a workshop; you never know what maverick gears may spin off course and make a mad break for your irises. This practical purpose makes goggles a logical and not-necessarily trendy choice for tinkering types.

With all that is going on in an inventor’s outfit, it can be hard to pin this archetype down, but it cannot be denied that this group adds an important element of science, eccentricity, and wonder into the world of steampunk and helps the subculture live up to the punch-fueled words of the Catastrophone Orchestra and Arts Collective’s article in the first issue of the Steampunk Magazine: “Steampunk overthrows the factory of consciousness by means of beautiful entropy, creating a seamless paradox between the practical and the fanciful.” The unbridled creativity that rockets out of inventor’s garb keeps steampunk’s toes tickling the waters of alternate reality and endless imagination.

This creativity also prods the DIY factor of steampunk along with the stampede of time, thus keeping the movement from vaporizing into the vapidness a mass production becoming more prevalent in steampunk due to the growing popularity of the subculture. By injecting steampunk with fresh ideas, inventors keep the movement on the tracks of growth, and prevent it from being derailed into the wasteland of over-production and cliched characteristics that ultimately end up suffocating most subcultures when they become mainstreamed.
